by Heather PharesThe Concretes' debut album Boy, You Better Run Now -- which collects their first two EPs -- showcases the Swedish collective's quirky pop hooks and arrangements. Reminiscent at times of a laid-back Stereo Total, the group is equally comfortable with straightforward, '60s-style pop like Teen Love and Vacation as well as darker, slinkier songs like Other Ones and Sunsets. Cheap keyboards, organs, and brass decorate simple, lilting melodies like Give a Little, Cabaret, and Contamination, and the unvarnished production and playing only adds to Boy, You Better Run Now's sweet, slightly off-kilter charm. A thoroughly enjoyable indie pop find.
