Jazz is a four letter word with many meanings. Suffice to say that if, as novelist F Scott Fitzgerald claimed, the Jazz age began in the Twenties, then we shall soon be celebrating the centenary of a style that re-wrote the musical rulebook. And when we do, many of the names featured on this compilation will loom large. Space preludes mention of all the performers whose timeless talents have been crammed into this 46 track extravaganza, but trust us when we say Jazz singers don't come much more essential than this!
