“I love to sing and write music because it enables me to express myself in a way that I couldn’t do in conversation.”-Laura
Laura Sully is a singer/songwriter from Suwanee, GA who has been singing and writing songs since she was just a young girl. She says she got her start as a “closet” singer, literally and figuratively, as she was a shy young singer, but also would write all her songs in her closet away from the distractions of her large and boisterous 7 piece family. Along with this, music was in her blood. Growing up, her dad was heavily involved in music, being a drummer and guitar player in several bands and recording music in his home studio. She remembers many nights falling asleep to the rhythm of her dad on the drums. It was in these early years that her musical dreams began.
She began her training in music seated at the piano because her dad insisted that in order to be a great singer, she must first learn to be a good musician. As she grew older, she began performing in local talent competitions and eventually became a professional singer in several local and touring bands. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago, that her childhood dreams began to shift to a new focus. With a new Christian faith of her own, Laura began to focus her musical ventures upward. She no longer wanted to sing for her own fulfillment and fame, but to glorify her maker and to spread the hope and security she had found in Christ.
“Why Do You Run”, is a deeply personal album to Laura that has come from experiences that began as a young teen. She began writing the songs on this album last summer and finished them up during the recording process. She says, “I hope to reach all sorts of people through these songs. I never want to sound like I’m preaching at people with a judgmental tone. If you hear me preaching something, it’s probably because I’m preaching it to myself. I just want to love others and point them towards truth through music.” “Don’t Let Me Forget” is a song on the EP that describes the core of Laura’s heart in ministry. She hopes to never forget her roots and the story of grace in her life. As a newly-wed, Laura wrote, “From This Day On”, as a wedding gift. She says, “I surprised him and sang it for him for the first time at our reception. That was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do! I came close to breaking down mid song!”
Along with writing, recording and performing Laura currently teaches voice lessons. She loves teaching because her students inspire her in writing and keep her accountable for practicing herself. She also works with high school and middle schoolers as a Youth leader at her church.
Ultimately, Laura has expressed that her genuine mission is to be a wise steward of the gifts God has blessed her with. She feels that God has given her a responsibility to share the story and talent she has with others in order to inspire and draw people to truth.
