Sings in English and French… with grace, precision and talent…’
Rising star Gabrielle brings her special blend of Gallic charm and sophistication to the British jazz scene. Technically gifted and artistically at home in styles ranging from contemporary jazz to French popular song, this vocalist who, in 2003, reached the final of French “Pop Idol” and then studied jazz at the Guildhall, is now performing with her own quintet, major London big bands and top orchestras in addition to touring, television and radio appearances.
Singing in English and her native French, Gabrielle performs Parisian-style jazz and tango, putting a fresh spin on songs by Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, Astor Piazzolla and more. Her band, including some of Europe’s finest musicians in an authentic line-up of guitar, violin and accordion, provides the perfect anchor for her superlative vocals.
From Pop Idol to Piaf … and Paris
Gabrielle and her band are currently touring the UK with her latest album Notes from Paris, which in February 2014 had a sell-out launch at London’s Pizza Express Jazz Club and was Jazz FM’s “Album of the Week”.
Featuring modern jazz arrangements of songs such as “Je ne regrette rien” and “Sous le ciel de Paris”, and acclaimed musicians Nicolas Meier and Gilad Atzmon, Notes from Paris has been called “Polished, classy and refined … such a strong statement”.
After a special guest appearance on Radio 4’s “Loose Ends”, Gabrielle is thrilled to be playing at London’s latest cabaret venue The Crazy Coqs, and in May stars at the St James Theatre as part of its “Jazz Diva” series.
This follows on from notable performances in 2013 at Ronnie Scott’s Bar, the Royal Festival Hall, Hideaway jazz clubs and a successful 2012 UK tour that took in venues from St Ives to Southport.
Gabrielle received special acclaim for her appearances at Lichfield and Porthcawl, where she was hailed as “the big hit of Porthcawl Jazz Festival”.
In 2011, Gabrielle’s well-acclaimed debut jazz album J’ai Deux Amours was released on MGP Records. It featured her own arrangements of American and French jazz standards in collaboration with international jazz musicians, including Chris Garrick and Nicolas Meier, who continues to be a major musical partner. Also playing regularly with Gabrielle are Richard Jones, Luca Boscagin, Renato d’Aiello, Maurizio Minardi, Dan Teper, all highly esteemed musicians in their own right.
Gabrielle Ducomble is now a firm favourite in her adopted UK and this year takes her music even further afield … we hope to a venue near you.
More about Gabrielle…
Born in Belgium, Gabrielle grew up in a musical environment and began singing at a young age. Following success in local and national singing competitions, she reached the final of the French “Pop Idol” in 2003. She signed to BMG Sony France and the resulting album went double gold. During a period in the media spotlight, Gabrielle wrote music and recorded with Belgian jazz and pop legends Mimi Verderame and Jean-Louis Daulne.
Her performance was awarded a prize by the Concours des Auteurs Compositeurs & Interprètes, and some numbers were chosen by a leading Belgian cultural organisation for CD release. Gabrielle also had the privilege to work with the pop star Lara Fabian on her international tour “Un Regard Neuf”.
After hearing singer Dee Dee Bridgewater’s album Dear Ella, Gabrielle was inspired to learn more about jazz. She finished her economics degree and following a sojourn in Lyon, she moved to London to immerse herself in the music, graduating in 2009 with a postgraduate qualification in jazz from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
