HEXA MERA, a young Belgian melodic death metal band with an opinion.
HEXA MERA, Ancient Greek for 'sixth day', the day that God created man in his image. The ultimate creatures at the top of the food chain, of which we are are supposedly direct descendants. We do not believe in these dogmatic theorems nor in the existence of God, but mankind is central to our lyrics. Humanity has written a lot of stories and has filled pantheons with almighty entities to explain a divine creation of our kind. However our species is not holy, but rather more like a parasite that taints everything around it and brings about its destruction. We take everything we can use and look at earth as our planet, our property. This selfish greed is causing our own eradication. Our numbers grow, we pollute our environment, create conflict and use weapons of mass destruction. Man is the most dangerous animal on earth, with the power of manipulating nature in whichever way we want to, with no thought for the consequences.
HEXA MERA is not about fairy tales from the bible, but about the behaviour of our own kind and everything we create and destroy. We confront you with the hard facts accompanied by melodic death metal with influences from all corners of the hard metal spectrum. We are five individuals with a passion and an opinion. We share this with you through HEXA MERA.
The band was started in January 2010 by guitarist Jan Huygens and drummer Pierre Baudez. One day after meeting in a pub they ended up in the same rehearsal space and the idea to start a metal band was born. Not long after that a second guitarist, Dennis Hemmerechts, joined the group. After months of searching and experimenting with different bass players and singers they came across Dennis De Braekeler (Stoosh) at a local summer festival. Stoosh tried out the day after and joined the line-up. Shortly afterwards we met Yannick and our band was complete. The first EP 'Descent Into Decay' was recorded and then released during our first show at the end of 2011. The band started performing frequent live shows across Flanders. We were quickly accepted in the shrinking metal community and had a blast. We have shared the stage with a multitude of national and international bands. At the end of 2012 we participated in Huginn's Awakening Fest Battle. We got first place and this victory motivated us to enter a bigger competition: the Red Bull Bedroom Jam 2013. We also won this contest and this resulted in a spot at the biggest metal festival in Belgium: Graspop Metal Meeting! We gave it our all in front of a full Metaldome! During that evening, we said goodbye to Dennis Hemmerechts, and Mathias Vergaelen joined us as guitarist. 2013 was an amazing year with a lot of events and we hope to continue this trend in 2014. We released our first professional videoclip 'The System Has Failed' in avril 2014. We also entered the studio to record our first full album. On september the 27th we released our first single 'Scarred Eyes' taken from the new upcoming album and the 1st of november we will unleash our album 'Human Entropy' upon civilization.
