Swedish man Johan and Japanese boy Ryo came to Sydney a few years ago to pursue lifelong dreams of music and good weather. Out of the ashes of the disbanding of their band -bleached- rose a new band they dubbed The Kobayashis. They wanted a more organic sound and replaced distortion with acoustics. But as the name proved to be relatively hard for people to commit to memory, and since they wanted to be committed to memory a name-change was of the essence. After a few failed attempts (Sven and the Happy Jappy, the Hard-drinking housewives, etc) it was decided that The Sleepyheads accurately depicted their acoustic appeal and reluctance to leave bed. It also occurred to Johan and Ryo that among their friends and neighbours was an alarmingly high number of very talented musicians.
John was lured in through a series of encounters with Ryo, where the boys quickly went from platonic love at first sight to platonic love at all sightings and Ryo found John to be an Indian/Chinese version of himself. His bass playing isn't bad either.
Matt was snared via a common love for film and lazy days. His talents are much too big for his body and range from the cajon to the tambourine and the egg.
Dan Jackson, who blessed Bleached with his bass playing, has agreed to reprise (and escalate) his general awesomeness and to add the keyboards to his repertoire.
Eric is a marvelous friend from back in the day, who moved from the US to Australia to pursue audio engineering. After working with us for a while we all decided that rather than just being involved with post-production, he needed to be involved in the pre as well. He's very good.
Claire and Ryo bonded over a shared weakness for pale British men gazing at their shoes. With sweet vocals, great keyboard and tambourine skills she is an invaluable asset to the band, and a key music-family member.
Carol is also really great. When The Sleepyheads first heard her sing they collectively melted like ice cream in a volcano. This pattern has been repeated every time she busts out a tune, but who needs ice cream when you have a singer like Carol?
The band's motto 'the more the merrier' leaves an invitation/request for more musicians to join their ranks, mainly in the form of the violin, the cello and the trumpet.
We have as of June 2009 finished off our debut EP 'This is not an Exit' and we are preparing for taking the Sydney live scene by storm. Details of upcoming shows soon to come.
