The Philharmonisches Orchester Hagen ( Philharmonic Orchestra Hagen) was founded in 1907 as the first municipal orchestra of Westphalia, on the initiative of the music director of the Hagen Concert Society Robert Laugs. After interruptions during the two world wars activities could be resumed already in January 1946. Berthold Lehmann followed Klaus Nettstraeter as Musical Director in the year 1949. The Hagen Music Days, which takes place every year, was now brought into being. 
Musical Director Reinhard Schwarz who took over Lehmanns tasks from 1970 advanced the Orchestras youth projects and alongside projects with schools, the Hagen Music Competition was announced for the first time in 1979. In the following years GMD Michael Halasz, through continuous progressive work, managed to double the numbers of visitors and from 1982 the new civic hall offered the orchestra, and its newly expanded audience, a new home. In 1990 Gerhard Markson took on the position of Hagen Musical Director, strengthening the supraregional involvement of the orchestra, besides his work in the operatic field. 
After a five-year cooperation with the South Westphalian Philharmonia Hilchenbach and under the musical directorship of GMD Georg Fritzsch, the orchestra again became independent in August 2002. From 2004 the Dutchman Antony Hermus took on the directorship of the Philharmonic Orchestra, which now aims to gain a new and younger audience, besides its traditionally close connection to the theatre of the city of Hagen.

The young Dutch conductor Antony Hermus is one of the brightest of a new generation of conductors. In 2003 he was appointed General Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra Hagen and the Theatre of Hagen, where he has gained many awards for his work. Despite his young age Antony has already conducted a wide repertoire: approximately 200 symphonic pieces, around 50 operas, most of them new productions, eg »Carmen«, »Don Giovanni«, »Le Nozze di Figaro«, »Faust«, »La Bohème«, »Tosca«, »Katja Kabanova«, »LEnfant et les sortilèges«, »Il barbiere di Siviglia«, »La Forza del Destino«, »Der fliegende Holländer«, »Tannhäuser«, »Die tote Stadt«, »Elektra«, »Manon« and »Falstaff«. 
Born in the Netherlands in 1973 Antony started playing the piano at the age of six. At the Tilburg Music Conservatory he studied piano (with Jacques de Tiège) and orchestra conducting (with Jac. van Steen and Georg Fritzsch). In 1996 he founded the orchestra »Ananta«, which he conducted on several international tours. 
Besides the conducting of the »standard-repertoire« Antony was also responsible for many »rediscoveries«, eg »Die Königskinder« (Humperdinck) and »Kleider machen Leute« (Zemlinsky). He has also conducted a lot of contemporary music, in the opera eg »Where the Wild Things are« by Oliver Knussen, the world premiere of the new version of »Helle Nächte« by Moritz Eggert and the West German premiere of »Dead Man Walking« by Jake Heggie. 
During the last years Antony conducted many orchestras, eg the Nürnberger Symphoniker, the Bochumer Symphoniker, the RTE National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Brabant Orchestra, the Orchestre de Bretagne, and the Philharmonic Orchestras of Duisburg, Magdeburg, Freiburg, Kiel, Oldenburg, Osnabrück and Rostock. In November 2005 he conducted a very succesful production of »Der Freischütz« by Weber at the opera of Rennes (France). There he was requested again to conduct a new production of »Cosi fan tutte« in November 2007 in cooperation with the Opéra de Bastille in Paris. 
In August of this year he made his highly acclaimed Asia debut conducting the Taipei Symphony Orchestra and the Chimei Philharmonic Orchestra in balletperformances through all Taiwan. 
He has worked together with many famous soloists, eg Enrico Pace, Francisco Araiza, Johan Botha, Martin Fröst, Tanja Becker-Bender, Julie Kaufmann, David Geringas, Severin von Eckardstein, Homero Francesch, Roby Lakatos, Andrea Lieberknecht and the piano duo Paratore. 
In November 2005 a much-praised CD with the Philharmonic Orchestra Hagen with music by Hans Rott and Gustav Mahler (1st Symphony) appeared. In October 2007 a CD with a symphonic version of »Tristan and Isolde« by Wagner was released. Already in 2002 Antony was a scholarship holder of the Richard-Wagner-Society and got the Kulturpreis of the city of Hagen. 
In the reviewer survey of 2007 und 2008 Antony received many nominations as the best conductor of the season in Nordrhein-Westfalen. For the next seasons debuts are scheduled at the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie Herford, the Jenaer Philharmonie, the Gelders Orchestra Arnhem, the Limburg Symphony Orchestra and LOrchestre de lOpéra de Rouen. He will conduct new productions of »Tsar Saltan« by Rimsky-Korsakov at the Opera Zuid (NL), »Matrimonio Segreto« by Cimarosa at the Opéra National de Paris and »Don Giovanni« in Rennes. In February 2010 Antony will give his concert debut with the Orchestre de lOpéra National de Paris in the Palais Garnier.
