Guitarist Ramon Justicia has earned accolades from critics and audiences in Europe, the United States and Latin America. Music reviewers have described his playing as "majestic" with a "huge sound and solid technique," and have called him "a privileged master of the guitar." The prestigious Guitar Review praised Mr. Justicia's technique for his "distinctive interpretive personality."
A native of Santurce, Puerto Rico, Mr. Justicia graduated from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music , founded by the world known spanish cellist Pablo Casals. Mr. Justicia studied with Leonardo Egurbida, a highly respected teacher. performer and composer on the island. He continued on to advanced studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid Spain with Jorge Ariza and then embarked on a professional career of concert engagements in Latin America and the United States as a soloist and chamber music performer.
Well known in the concert field in Puerto Rico, he has played in the highly regarded international Guitar Festival in Puerto Rico, and has performed with other distinguished guitar soloists such as Sharon Isbin, Ernesto Bitteti, Manuel Barrueco and Oscar Ghiglia.
Mr. Justicia, who made his New York debut in a memorable performance of Joaquin Rodrigo's "Fantasia para un Gentilhombre" with the New York Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, has become a much sought-after guitarist in the chamber music field.
In addition to Carnegie Hall, he has appeared in venues like Camy Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Arts and other halls and theaters in New York City. He has also performed as a soloist in Washington, D.C., Indiana, and Princeton N.J. Mr. Justicia has also played extensively in Spain, Paris, France and in Latin America. He has been invited to perform in Venezuela and other caribbean countries.
A recipient of the 1986 Music Award given by the Puerto Rican Institute in New York , he was one of four guitar virtuosos featured on Guitar Masters, a series of recordings highlighting the works of exceptional musicians on the A.I.G. label. Mr. Justicia also recorded Canciones de mi Isla, a collection of children's songs from Puerto Rico, and has recently made his first CD recording paying tribute to Andres Segovia. He served as a juror at the Music teachers national association Guitar competition held in New York in 1987.
One of South Florida's most active guitarists, Ramon Justicia has performed regularly at different venues in South Florida like the Broward Performing Arts Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Gusman Concert Hall in Miami, Kravis Center in Palm Beach, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Key West. He was a featured artist with the Florida Youth Orchestra during the 2003-2004 season. An approved music instructor to the children of Broward County Schools, Ramon, is currently teaching at the Autry Music School in Fort Lauderdale. His extensive repertoire includes great guitar classics as well as music from Spain and Latin America and the best of american popular favorites.
