For those of you whom I don’t know, or who are just discovering me or my music, my name is Jon Morris. I am a singer songwriter from Pensacola, Florida.
I started playing music at the age of 13 when, through a complete act of grace, my cousin gave me my grandpa’s old electric guitar, which had been sitting unplayed in a closet. Buying a new chord book and listening to music through a pair of headphones, I learned guitar on my own, holing myself up in my room and practicing my favorite songs. Soon after, I became involved in my church youth group and eventually began playing with our worship band.
Around the age of 15, I wrote my first song with a friend, and from that point, songwriting became one of my greatest passions. When a good friend of mine recorded his first CD at our other friend’s home studio, I made it a goal to record one of my own as well. I recorded my first CD, a full-length project entitled “Since I’ve Seen the Rain,” during my senior year of high school and released it after graduation, selling copies at local coffee-house gigs and shows at small churches. I then moved to Mobile, Alabama for my first semester of college and continued to play shows and write music there.
I moved back to Pensacola a few months later, though, and getting settled back in, decided to record another CD. This time around, I wanted to focus on crafting a tighter collection of songs woven together with a unifying theme. So I recorded a 5-song project called “The Sunshine EP” over the course of a few months at my friend’s home studio once again and released it in the summer of 2009, celebrating the release with a full-band show at my church. I played pretty irregularly the following few months until I put on another show in the spring of 2010 to help raise funds for a mission trip I would be going on that summer after graduating college.
Needless to say, a lot has happened in the meantime. I began teaching middle school in August of 2010, got married in June of 2011, and recorded and released my first professional EP with producer Ben Shive in June of 2012.
Right now, I am working toward pursuing music full time: releasing my new CD, touring, playing shows, writing new music, and just enjoying life.
I feel incredibly blessed and humbled to be on the journey I am on right now, am extremely excited about the new album, and pray that God will use my songs to speak love and truth to people.
