I started writing poetry when I was 10...Mrs. Patterson's 4th grade class; that's when I found that I had a gift for words. I was good at it...and it felt good.
This was around the time that I wrote my first song, which was a piano instrumental. I can still play it...pretty "grounding" for me actually.
I was exposed to some incredible music for a kid my age. Amazingly, people whom I credit this experience to were all teenagers at the time. My older sister & her friends would all hang out at our house and sit in the backyard, in a circle, playing guitar and singing....For me this was heaven.
I was 9, 10 years old and they thought enough of me to let me hang out and sing with them. How cool was that? Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young,
The Beatles, The Who, Joni Mitchell among other amazing singer/songwriters. This would be the first time I would ever sing in front of people; the first time I realized I could harmonize. These are among my favorite memories as a child and made a definite impact on who I am and how I write, from my songs down to my poetry.
Music would always play a huge part throughout my life. Just like every songwriter it seems, music helped me struggle through teenage angst, life's struggles & challenges, love, heartbreak and soul searching.
Best therapy there is.....
I believe that God has blessed me with a gift of words and the ability to be a storyteller through music. This led me down the country music path a few years ago. Prior to this, throughout the years I had leaned toward folk & indie in my writing. Not far from country music at all. I still write in that style quite a bit and I love to listen to it, but I found the beauty & raw emotion that country music had and has had for years. The more I listened, the more I loved it and even now it seems like a new discovery to me. I'm excited at all the topics that this genre allows a songwriter to touch on.
Topics that can leave you in stitches to topics that can tear your heart out.
I also write Christian music, which seems to just come...Touches my heart, my soul and lifts my spirit.
Until recently, I've kept my music within my comfort zone; close friends, family and church. With the encouragement of these amazing people in my life, I'm putting my gift, my songs, & my soul on display. I get it....this was given to me for a reason and if I could touch one person with a lyric, an emotion, then it's worth it....
Long Time Runnin' is the first collection of my works. I pray that it is enjoyed and well received; and I am able to share the many songs I have written and will write in the future...
Therapy's expensive and there's so much more to say !!!
