Vivian Buczek - vocals
Vivian Buczek graduated from Malmö Academy of Music Sweden as a singing teacher in 2003. Born into a family of jazz musicians: her father a trombonist and her mother a vibraphonist, both well known on Polish jazz scene. Her first album, Can’t We Be Friends? (Scandia Music), was recorded in Poland with other leading musicians. The album enjoyed widespread success, even in Japan, and was listed among the top 16 female jazz albums of 2003. Her second album, Straight From My Heart (Lovestreet Records), with the Claes Crona Quartet (with Danish tenor saxophonist Jesper Thilo on five tracks) was released in 2007. In 2009, she released her third album, Dedication To My Giants (Crown Jewels), with the Claes Crona Trio and Andreas Öberg, on guitar, and vocalist Roger Pontare. Vivian has performed with jazz personalities including Clark Terry, Toots Thielemans, Scott Hamilton, Georgie Fame, Barbara Hendricks and Swedish stars like Putte Wickman, Svante Thuresson and Jan Lundgren.
Vivian is unique in her preference for singing advanced music composed by Horace Silver, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis and others jazz giants. In 2009, Vivian got very good reviews as vocalist on We Like Previn – A Jazz Tribute to André Previn (VOLENZA).
Jan Lundgren - piano, arr
Since the release of his album Conclusion (Four Leaf Clover), in 1994, Jan is one of the finest contemporary jazz performers. Born in 1966, in Olofström, southern Sweden, Jan moved to Ronneby, and started playing the piano at an early age, initially focusing on classical. At 15, he joined a local youth big band. Early in his career, he played at the annual Ronneby Jazz Festival accompanying Benny Bailey, Bernt Rosengren, Nisse Sandström, Arne Domnérus (who discovered Jan) and many others, before studying at Malmö College of Music for five years. In 1998, his album, Swedish Standards (Sittel), was awarded Gyllene Skivan, (The Golden Record, best Swedish jazz record of the year.). Jan’s talent was showcased in Collaboration (Fresh Sound) in 2001. He plays the piano with the late, legendary, Pete Jolly. New sides of his repertoire are demonstrated on Mare Nostrum (ACT) and Magnum Mysterium (ACT), and 2009 saw the release of Euro- pean Standards (ACT). Jan has played with talents such as Herb Geller, Conte Candoli, Joe La Barbera, Richard Galliano and Johnny Griffin.
Of particular note is Jan’s interest in The Great American Song Book. Jan arranged and delivered a typically outstanding performance on 2009’s We Like Previn – A Jazz Tribute to André Previn (VOLENZA). One of his most popular compositions is MZ, a tribute to Swedish jazz singer Monica Zetterlund, shortly after her death.
Jacob Fischer - guitar
Born in 1967, Jacob made his debut at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival at the age of 17, and has been one of the hardest working musicians in Scandinavia ever since. Jacob has worked with Scandinavia’s top musicians, and visiting international jazz greats such as Art Farmer, Lee Konitz, Toots Thielemans, Scott Hamilton, and John Abercombie. Since 1992, Jacob has been a member of violin legend Svend Asmussen’s quartet. In 2008, he finally decided to release an album in his own name, Jacob Fischer Trio (Gateway music), featuring Asmussen – still swinging at 92! – on six tracks. In 2009, Jacob released and produced a second album, Jacob
Fischer – Blues, with Martin Schack, Hammond organ, and Casper Mikkelsen on drums. Jacob won the Silkeborg Jazz Prize in 2003, and is the only Danish musician to win the three “great” prizes: the JASA Prize in 1992 (the Danish jazz critics award), The Ben Webster Prize in 1996 and Palaebar’s Prize in 1998. Jacob was with baritone sax player, Peter Gullin, on an album that was awarded “Gyllene skivan” (The Golden record) in 1992. Jacob appears on Hans Backenroth’s first CD Bassic Instinct (PB7). In 2009, he played an important role on We Like Previn – A Jazz Tribute to André Previn (VOLENZA).
Hans Backenroth - bass
Born in Karlstad, Sweden, in 1966, Hans began playing classical guitar when he was eight years old. In 1984, Hans saw Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted-Pedersen in concert, and the double bass became Hans’ main instrument. In Stockholm he studied at the Royal Academy of Music between 1987 and 1990. Hans was soon playing with musicians such as Bernt Rosengren, Monica Zetter- lund, Bengt Hallberg, and the Swedish Radio Jazz Group. In 1991, Hans replaced the great bassist Red Mitchell for a tour with the clarinetist Putte Wickman Quartet in the US and Canada. Also in 1991, Hans started to play with alto player and clarinettist Arne Domnérus and continued to do so for nearly 16 years. According to Arne: “Hans Backenroth is possibly the best bass player Sweden has produced – ever!” Since the 1990s, Hans has toured extensively throughout Europe, the US, Canada and Japan. He has performed with musicians such as Kenny Barron, Clark Terry, Doug Raney, Harry Sweets Edison, Toots Thielemans, Buddy DeFranco, Roger Kellaway, Junior Mance, and Svend Asmussen. In 2009, he made his first record in his own name, Bassic Instinct, (PB7) with Bernt Rosengren, tenor sax, Jacob Fischer, guitar, Roger Johansen, drums, Kjell Öhman, piano and Georg Riedel double bass. Also in 2009, Hans was part of the group playing on the album We Like Previn – a Jazz Tribute to André Previn (VOLENZA). In April 2010, Hans won the Swedish “Golden record” – for the second time – with the Bernt Rosengren Quartet.
Johan Löfcrantz Ramsay - drums
Johan Löfcrantz Ramsay, born 1969, grew up surrounded by family members who played and sang together: he started playing the cello when he was just four years old, and at five, before taking private drum lessons, he had built a drum set from saucepans. At the time, his most important influences included Aretha Franklin, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chick Corea and Stanley Clark. At 15 he formed a group of his own. Johan was first properly exposed to jazz music at high school. In 1988, he was awarded a scho- larship from the Thore Swanerud’s Foundation. From 1988 to 1993 he continued his studies at the Royal College of Music, where he was taught by Pétur ‘Island’ Östlund. Johan has performed with most of the great Swedish musicians and artists, such as Arne Domnérus, Putte Wickman, Monica Zetterlund, Rigmor Gustavsson, Svante Thuresson and Viktoria Tolstoy. As well as with the Swedish Radio Jazz Group and the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, Johan has worked with international musicians such as Toots Thielemans, Clark Terry, and Maria Schneider. He was also important on the album We Like Previn – A Jazz Tribute to André Previn (VOLENZA).
