Swing music, a form of jazz was developed in the 1920s and matured by the mid 1930's by various artists like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, The Dorsey Brothers, Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, Earl Hines, Artie Shaw, Gene Krupa, Glenn Miller and Chick Webb. By the late 1930's through the early 40's Swing was the most popular musical style in the USA.
Swing declined in popularity during WWII. The war had many of the musicians overseas and it became difficult to get enough people together to form a proper band. Touring became more difficult during the war due to restrictions and costs. Most importantly it became difficult to staff a "big band" because many musicians were overseas fighting in the war. Smaller bands evolved from the swing bands and these evolved into new styles of music by the 1950's.
A swing revival occurred in the late 1990's and lasted a few years with several bands evolving during this time. Some of the most successful bands included the Royal Crown Revue, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Cherry Poppin' Daddies and the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Although the revival ended very quickly some of these bands are still active for the people who love this musical style.
