One of the pleasure’s of helping a community youth music project flourish in Brighton (Audioactive) is bumping into one of the hundreds of kids who’ve been switched on to making music several years down the line – DJs, producers, singers, rappers, MCs, etc.
So imagine my surprise when when a 21-year-old kid with the biggest afro I’ve seen in a long time who’s making my champagne cocktails at Brown’s says he knows me. “Hey it’s Benji, the beatboxer from Audioactive” – and suddenly of course I recognise him!
Here’s the clincher: Benji, now known as Benji Boko, has recently been signed to the Nightmares on Wax label, Wax On Records, and has an album coming out in the next year.
And then, if that wasn’t enough, he’s sharing the stage with DJ Yoda at the wonderfully (?) polka-dotted Ocean Rooms on New Year’s Eve. Earlier this year, he supported Nightmares on Wax, DJ Krush, 4HERO & AIM at the Honey Club so it will be no big shock to be around some of the biggest names in music.
Benji told me he would have never gotten into music and DJing if it hadn’t been for those days of beatboxing down at the youth centre about six years ago. And I’m like ‘Wow’. It’s not the first success story, but I’m still massively impressed nonetheless. Nightmares on Wax!
In the past year, Benji’s brought out three tunes on the label: “The Jungle V.I.P”, which reached the 16th best selling track on iTunes electronic charts; “Kudos”; and “Take A Look Around” (remix). They all available on iTunes, Juno, or FatCity.
Benji’s unique hip hop style is very Brighton: it reminds me of student fave Mr Scruff’s low-key ‘ness and mimics the silly, thumb-on-nose approach to music that Beardyman & Co and other UK hip hop heads (eg DJ Yoda) have champtioned here on the south coast. I think all takes on the hip hop genre are a good thing, especially ones that counter the overly-serious gangster fronting in mainstream and American rap and hip hop music, and I think Benji will add his own mark to the music scene in time – both here and around the world.
While you’re waiting for Benji’s album to come out, I highly recommend getting a flavor of his newer track on his myspace page. He’d probably get annoyed with me saying it, but the tracks are cute and definitely made me feel light-hearted listening to them.
