Jacob Cooper's bold compositions and multimedia works have garnered recognition throughout North America and Europe, with performances by the JACK Quartet, the Calder Quartet, Ensemble ACJW, the NOW Ensemble, and the Minnesota Orchestra. His work has recently appeared or will soon appear at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the MATA Festival (New York), the Wordless Music concert series at the Miller Theater (New York), Bargemusic (Brooklyn), Music With a View at the Flea Theater (New York), Present Music's "Around 30" celebration (Milwaukee), and the Choregie Festival (Maribor, Slovenia). Jacob's album-length song cycle for soprano Mellissa Hughes is slated for release in March 2014; upcoming projects include commissions for eighth blackbird, the Albany Symphony, and The Living Earth Show.
Lauded as "richly talented" (The New York Times) and "a maverick electronic song composer" (The New Yorker), Jacob has earned awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, ASCAP, and the American Music Center, and was the winner of the 2011 Carlsbad Music Festival competition. He has attended the Bang on a Can Summer Institute and the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, and he has held residences at the Ucross Foundation, the Banff Centre, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Jacob is also the least well-dressed of the six composers in the collective Sleeping Giant, whose members are "rapidly gaining notice for their daring innovations, stylistic range and acute attention to instrumental nuance" (WQXR).
Timberbrit, Jacob’s "gutsy opera" (Time Out NY) about a fictional reunion between Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and in The Believer's annual music issue. The opera ran at the Incubator Arts Project and was presented in London by Carmen Elektra / Opera Underground. Jacob works in visual media as well, and his video Alla stagion dei fior was highlighted as a "rumbling, jittering threnody" (The New York Times), while Commencer une autre mort, which "skillfully toys with the audience's expectation and experience of opera" (Capital New York), was shortlisted for the 2010 YouTube / Guggenheim Biennial of Creative Video.
Also dedicated to teaching and scholarship, Jacob has served on the faculty at Amherst College. He authors program notes for subscription series concerts at Carnegie Hall and has completed the requirements for his doctorate in composition at the Yale School of Music.
