MVSCLES create an electric musical potion, gurgling with hypnotic grooves under an effervescent vapor of melody and noise. MVSCLES was born when Chad & Cat self-released their first song ‘sweet n sour’ in June 2012. Within a week, the booming nursery-rhyme had amassed over 40,000 plays, reaching #1 on Hype Machine. With recipes all their own, the American duo writes, records, and produces all MVSCLES music in their studio apartment lair. The result is pure MVSCLES, a utopian sensory experience that leaves you wanting more.

Last month Boston duo MVSCLES came out of nowhere and grabbed everyone’s attention with their whimsical debut single ‘sweet n sour’. Within a few weeks the wonderfully addicting track was nearing the embarrassing triple digit plays mark in my iTunes when the group put out their second song, ‘where you are’. Prepared for a let-down, I was happy to hear a song that lived up to (and maybe surpassed) the high bar set by ‘sweet n sour’. While holding on to the playful sound that made their first song so appealing, ‘where you are’ takes us to new places in an obvious sign of the duo’s range and willingness to try new things. At this point it has become obvious: These guys are for real.
 
I needed to know more. Two songs and a quirky twitter timeline wasn’t enough anymore. Fortunately, they were nice enough to let me ask some questions and allow us all a little peek into the world of MVSCLES.
 
Who are you?
We are Cat & Chad : MVSCLES !
 
First of all, I love the name. What’s the story behind that?
Thanks! We were out riding around on the bike shouting potential band names back and forth. MVSCLES was just fun to say.
 
How/why did you guys start making music together?
We’d been dating for about 2 years when we realized that we had been chosen to become MVSCLES.
 
I’ve seen your music described as ‘indie electropop’, ‘glo-fi’, and even ‘based pop’.  What do you think of these labels and how would you describe your sound?
We’ll take any labels people want to give us. It’s just MVSCLES. Our goal is to cross barriers by embracing everything we like. We want people to feel surprised and pleased.
 
Whose genius idea was it to use a picture of a mustachioed monkey as the cover of your first single?
We get around on a bike together in a fashion which we like to call “marmoset style”. I do the pedaling, and Cat hangs on. So while I stand on the pedals and navigate, she sits and clings on to me like a marmoset. I did an animal report on them too. Anyway, turns out those are actually emperor tamarins in the ‘sweet n sour’ art. They resemble us.
 
What do you like to do when you’re not making music?
Eat ice cream, ride bikes, dog watching.
 
Because the music is so unique, it’s hard to pick up on any obvious influences. Who/what are some of your biggest influences (musically or otherwise)?
We’re coming from different angles. Cat studied musical theater and I was a drummer who went to music school. We both studied performance in one way or another. Acting inspires us both a lot.
 
I love the line “if I hadn’t met sour, I’d have never known sweet” from ‘sweet n sour’.  Can you explain what went into writing that?
Thanks! The lyrics had multiple meanings, and we keep finding new meanings as it ages. It’s best to leave it open to interpretation.
 
Is it true that an alien from outer-space writes your music?
Mostly, his name is Maurice. He transmits ideas to us telepathically. He’s very positive.
 
How did the buzz surrounding ‘sweet n sour’ affect the creation of ‘where you are’ (if at all)? Did you feel any pressure to live up to the successes of your first song?
‘Where you are’ was definitely affected by all the attention. It was more difficult to write. We had the beat for a while and the lyrics came much later, but all at once. It was a relief to finish the song. Maurice hooked it up.
 
What are your plans for the next few months?  New music?  Music videos? Live shows?
Writing! Moving to LA and writing. We’ve been working on new music for an album. We’ve got video plans for “sweet n sour”. We need time to build our mvscles.

For anyone who thinks MVSCLES copied “CHVRCHES”….
 
When Cat & I created MVSCLES and released ‘sweet n sour’ in June of 2012, we couldn’t have imagined something so new and personal becoming immediately a part of so many other people’s lives. Within our first week of being a band, we reached over 40k plays. It felt amazing to share our world with others. It was the first time either of us had experienced any serious attention for our music. It’s no coincidence that our press coverage from Summer of 2012 has no mention of CHVRCHES. That’s because they were called “Churches” at the time. Over a year later, we are now constantly being accused of copying CHVRCHES by writers and new listeners.
 
Short after MVSCLES reached the top ten on hypem.com with ‘sweet n sour’, Churches changed their band name to CHVRCHES. They were signed and marketed by an “independent” label, Glassnote Records, which has helped get them radio play, advertising across the internet, television appearances, and an awesome sounding album. They took the V and ran with it to the mainstream. They removed nearly all press with the old spelling “Churches” (except for theguardian.com’s Band of the Day featuring their song “Lies”, which was ironically posted the day we released ‘sweet n sour’). Since we were stuck in a bad record deal, we were unable to stake our claim and release any new music for an entire year (2013).
 
We contemplated changing our band name to avoid constantly being associated with them, but staying true to MVSCLES was most important to us. We feel so thankful to be back doing our thing and releasing the music we’ve worked so hard on all year. This is the last time we’ll ever mention the other band with a “V”. We wanted to make it clear that originality has always been #1 for MVSCLES, and we would never copy another artist so overtly.
