Songwriter Ben Brockett cast anchor in Brighton in late 2009 and whilst scouring the Seven Seas for lodgings, found himself sleeping on guitarist Joe Baker’s sofa bed (or hammock, for the purposes of this already tired analogy). They decided to form a band and quickly press-ganged drummer Paul Coventry from ‘The Good Ship East Sussex County Council’ and rescued marooned bassist Phil Ward, Vocalist Beth Chesser and pianist/Latvian Viktorija Mutore from the ‘HMS Gumtree’.  
 
 
With the crew assembled they set about fusing their different musical influences into a band. Ben is partial to a bit of folk, Joe loves the blues, Viktorija is a classically trained pianist, Paul was a rock drummer with a penchant for UK garage, Beth likes The Cranberries and Phil has far too many old prog albums under his bed.  
 
 
The resulting music takes elements of traditional British Folk and the 60’s folk revival and blends them with more modern influences. Think Pentangle and Fairport Convention jam with Belle and Sebastian, Radiohead and Low, with Joanna Newsom contributing lyrics. The songs have strong vocal melodies and harmonies, as you’d expect from a band with two lead singers. The instruments that drive these melodies create a rich, compelling tapestry of sound, whilst still remembering the mantra that sometimes less is more.  
 
 
In their relatively short existence The Galleons have garnered praise from many of the South Coast’s leading promoters, been invited to do live radio sessions on the BBC and some of the UK’s best new music shows, won over festival audiences across the country, and secured gigs at the world famous Stables in Milton Keynes and The Bedford in Balham.  
 
 
The Galleons will soon be releasing their first album, recorded live by Martin Levan who has produced John Martyn and Antonio Forcione amongst others. Exciting times, and further nautically themed ramblings can be expected.
