The Beginning: So it begins. We have been hesitant to say we are 'working on a new record' for the past many months but today marks the official beginning of battle to create recording number 3. Truth is we have been working on new songs for quite some time - I won't say how long but suffice to say we have whittled down the pile of songs/ideas to this last 15 songs that have withstood the test of recorded scrutiny and time. Being that we have been so afraid to announce that we are recording anything, I decided to take that whole sentiment in the other direction and write a bit about it. Smart? We'll see. I suppose I won't give away too much.
Today was the day of days. Laurence (our producer) arrived from Toronto yesterday amidst brutal winter storm #1 . We have never had a producer work on entire record with us... so this is a real treat. Last record Warne helped with half and Laurence with the other half, and the band basically went to work undermining most of their high-fidelity efforts as we cobbled together what became known as The Coast is Clear - a record we have come to have a love/hate relationship with. Love what it is, but hated the process we went through to make it. Making this record will be different.
On this day of days we loaded up entirely a 15 passenger van, a 5x8 trailer, and a subaru forester with every piece of musical gear we have amassed over the years, plus a pile of rented stuff I don't quite understand.
The day got off to a slow start but after a few requisite stops: Tim Horton's, Zellers and Dollar store in Truro, we were off Fox River NS. Driving was slow due to winter storm #2.
After winding through the back roads of highway #4, and route 209 we eventually (and rather haphazardly came across the stately schoolhouse). Our first impressions of the space blew us away. Every inch of the place screamed recording studio. There is a giant gallery upstairs and that is where've set up all the gear for making noises on. Laurence has setup up in a hallway, of all places, for his control room. The view is stunning. We look out into the wintry bay of Fundy and are lined up directly north of Cape Split. This beats the rat race of your average studio experience in a big city. Sadly, you don't need "big" studios anymore. You can build you own for relatively cheap. People like Laurence are priceless however.
Glen arrived later in the day, a bit hazy from his ECMA weekend in Freddy Beach. We all sat down for a nice meal and got straight to work doing "table reads" of our songs. So begins a new chapter of IFS-land. Can’t wait to be finished and sharing it with people other than the 5 of us. Patience in this regard has never been my forte.
