[00:03.935] Lolabelle was a mall dog.
[00:05.452] She came from one of the high-speed puppy mills,
[00:08.747] that breed dogs in batches, and then sell them in malls.
[00:17.982] She was bought by a couple who were in the middle of a divorce.
[00:23.032] And no-one could take her.
[00:27.821] The woman didn't want her.
[00:29.616] And the husband didn't want her.
[00:31.946] And the boy wanted her but nobody really wanted the boy.
[00:43.908] And so the man took Lolabelle with him to Canada,
[00:46.894] where he spent a month camping, and crying,
[00:50.017] and thinking it all through, and talking to himself.
[00:54.483] And Lolabelle rode up on the bow of the kayak,
[00:58.332] perched on the front, leading the way as the man paddled along,
[01:02.581] and tried to figure out what to do with his life.

[01:11.192] And I think that was where she learn the great skill of empathy.
[01:16.909] And also where she learned what our meditation teacher keeps telling us.
[01:24.387] And he says "You should try to learn how to feel sad, without being sad."
